How much do meals cost in Thailand?

July 10th, 2010 by admin

I am planning a trip to Thailand from California for a 14-day trip. I’ve got the hotel and airfare already covered. The tour also covers breakfast. So I was just curious how much would lunch and dinner normally cost per day on average so I can calculate how much to bring to cover the cost of meals.

you can eat at a Thai food stand for about $1 to $2. If you go to a western style indoor restaurant your pay anywhere between $3 to $10. if your going first class establishment your pay more. Just depends on you taste.

Also depends on which city you will visit. In capital or tourist destination, the cost is a little bit higher than urban. However, there are many choices & quite good quality (in any restaurants). For example, in Phuket it costs about USD 5/person in general restaurant or even in shopping centre (not for fast food). In nice restaurants or high-en hotels, more costs (may extra for nice wine). And of course, the cuisine’s also different costs. If you want to have an Italian/European food would cost you more than a nice Thai food.

I’ld suggest you to taste Thai food even local one (would cost you cheeper too USD1-3 approx.). Your should ask for suggestions from hotel staffs for the best local restaurants which most local people will go for eat. Even the best if you have a friend there. Because he/she would bring/suggest you the most yummy local food for you better than hotel staffs.

Cleanliness is a factor I would warn you if you want to try local stand (just in case).’

    Have a wonderful trip!

if you are looking for Regular food, fast food or Thai food, the cost will be considerably lower then in the states if you eat at outdoor vendors, or The -local Thai restaurants the food will be really inexpensive for at least 1/2 to 1/4 of what you would pay in the states and little or no tipping BUT if you choose to eat at an upscale hotel in Bangkok, much more expensive, In Chaing Mai lot less the exchange rate is about 37 baht to a American $

It’s up to where you eat.
I recomend you to eat at fancy restaurant once a day and go to where locals go for another meal.
You can eat at the hotels, department stores or restaurants. There are all kinds of restaurants in Thailand other than Thai food, Italian, French, Middle eastern, Korean or Japanese.
There are Fast Food restaurants like McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza hut and more. You’ll be amazed seeing all of those over there.
Or if you’d like to try street food, they everywhere and some places they sell it 24/7.
Plus food is super cheap in Thailand, you can get a very nice meal at Thai restaurant for less than $25.

    Have a nice trip!!

Authentic Thai food on every corner for US $1 or less and open all night so you will never go hungry or have a tough time finding something to eat.

This can include noodle soop, fried rice, rice and chicken, papaya salad and a host of other delicious thai dishes.

McDonalds double burger, fries, coke less than US $2

Kentucky Fried Chicken 2 piece meal with coke 99 baht (US $2.80)

Pizza Hut or Pizza Company Medium Pizza 260 baht = US $7.40

Dunkin Donuts or Mr Donut about 15 baht each or US $0.40

Tony Romas Authentic Ribs 550 baht for full slab with all the fixings US $15.71

Swensons Ice Cream banana split 125 baht

A good place for western food is Gullivers on Sukhumvit Road Soi 5. Get an excellent steak sandwich and fries for 170 baht (US$4.85), fish and chips 220 baht, pancake 100 baht.

Most of all the prices in the hotel will be quite high compared to almost everywhere else you can eat.

If you go to places like Siam Paragon Mall, they have all the fast food places in America, but they also have a food court with 100’s of choices of local dishes where a complete meal will be less than 100 baht.

I can get a couple of ears of steamed corn on the cob, chicken on the grill and sticky rice for about 40 baht here and it is really delicious.

Thailand is unique in whether you have 50 baht or 2000 baht, you can always find a good full tasty meal. You never have to worry about not having enough money to eat here.

Depends upon where you eat. From as low as $1 per meal at a streetside stall that serves hot food to $100 minimum at a restaurant of any star rated hotel. Set meals which include rice, salad etc are available at supermarkets for less than $1 and you can ask the hotel staff to microwave it for you.

First things although many foreigners who live in Thailand eat on the street I would advise you to do so, well not on the first day of your arrival.
Food courts are to be found in shopping centres/malls and other places and range from the cheap and chearful to quite exclusive and in the mid price range.
Restaurants are the same cheap to expensive. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that cheap restaurants are going to serve poor quality food many of them serve excellent food and are frequented by locals.
Gernally speaking western style food is going to be more expensive (everywhere in Thailand) than Thai or Asian food.
